Next to downtown Buenos Aires is Abasto, between Balvanera and Almagro neighborhoods; this area has been commonly identified with this name since the old Mercado del Abasto de Buenos Aires (Buenos Aires Provisions Market), nowadays a shopping centre, is located there. The famous singer Carlos Gardel, who was popularly called the “Morocho del Abasto” (Abasto dark-haired man), grew up in this neighborhood.

 

Today Abasto is home to artists, craftsmen, musicians, art galleries, ateliers, cultural centers and museums.
